Amazon workers in Germany resume strike over pay

Hundreds of employees in two of Amazon’s key sites in Germany have walked off their jobs in protest against their pay conditions.
According to Press TV, on Thursday, the trade union Verdi said at least 700 unionized staff refused to work the first shift of the day at Amazon’s distribution centers in the cities of Leipzig and Bad Hersfeld.
The walkout came after pay negotiations with the union broke down. Verdi is calling for Amazon to pay its 9,000 employees in Germany according to a sector-wide wage deal for the retail and mail-order industries.
Amazon refuses, saying it aligns with the lower rates paid by the German transport industry at logistics sites. Wages in the logistics sector in Germany are lower than in the distribution sector.
The German workers have gone on strike twice over the last several months, but Amazon has yet to budge on its stance.
Germany is Amazon.com’s second-biggest market after the United States. The Internet giant employs 9,000 warehouse staff plus 14,000 seasonal workers at nine distribution centers across Germany.
