Ambassador describes Pezeshkian’s upcoming trip to Moscow as a ‘historic’ event
Iran's ambassador to Russia has described the Iranian President's visit to Moscow, intended for the signing of a wide-ranging cooperation agreement with Russia, as a historic event.

Tehran and Moscow are witnessing advancements in their bilateral relations, grounded in their geographical proximity and aligned stances on regional and international matters, according to Iran’s Ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali. In an interview with IRNA, Jalali highlighted these elements as key factors in the ongoing diplomatic progress, coinciding with President Pezeshkian’s scheduled visit to Moscow on January 17, 2025.
Kazem Jalali, addressing a meeting with Iranian students and officials at Mechnikov University of Medical Sciences in St. Petersburg, announced that during this visit, a bilateral cooperation agreement is set to be signed by President Pezeshkian and President Vladimir Putin.
During a Monday press conference, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman addressed inquiries about the impending Iran-Russia long-term cooperation agreement, which is expected to be signed on January 17. The spokesman highlighted that the agreement encompasses multiple dimensions, notably in areas such as trade, economy, energy, and the environment, alongside crucial matters pertaining to defense and security.
A spokesperson stated that the negotiations surrounding the document have spanned various Iranian administrations, describing it as an updated version of a prior agreement.
A newly formulated document serves to enhance and bring up to date the previous agreement between the two nations. Initially ratified by both parties in the early months of last summer, the signing of these documents had been pending, awaiting an appropriate moment. Now, a definitive date for the formal signing has been established.
Iran and Russia have significantly broadened the scope of their collaboration across various sectors over the last 20 to 30 years. In light of evolving conditions, it was necessary to revise the existing agreement. This updated bilateral document aims to enhance the partnership between the two nations, according to statements made by Baghaei.
