An official statement from the White House described the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela as an “unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States” and declared a new round of economic sanctions against the country. However, across the United States many Americans are saying they don’t buy Washington’s claim. Among them is Sharon Eolis, a retired emergency room nurse who lives in Manhattan.

Brooklyn resident Daudi Anderson, a member of the All-African People’s Revolutionary Party, also found the allegation to be outrageous.

Those who doubt Washington’s claim have said they believe the United States is currently funding violent opposition groups that seek to destabilize and overthrow the government in Venezuela.

Sharon Eolis described the allegations as part of process gradually isolating the country.

She says it is a violation of the Venezuela’s basic sovereignty.

Since mid-January, more than 19,000 Americans have signed a petition directed to US President Barack Obama, declaring that Venezuela is in fact a “peace loving country.” The petition urges dialogue, not accusations and economic subversion.
