Palestinian landowner Mohammad Atiti has been attacked by over a dozen Israeli settlers when he was trying to plant seedlings. His farm is located near the Israeli Bat Ayin settlement, in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron, also known as al-Khalil.
During the Saturday incident, the settlers hurled rocks at Atiti and his family, and shouted abuse at them, before the Israeli army intervened. Atiti told us that Israeli troops forced him to leave instead of stopping the settlers. A member of the Popular Resistance Committee in Hebron al-Khalil says the settlers’ attacks against Palestinians are part of efforts to expand the Israeli settlements. Palestinian farmers in the West Bank city of Nabuls are also subject to attacks by the Israeli settlers. In the latest incident, the settlers smashed car windows and attacked them in the village of al-Jit. Members of the Popular Resistance Committee say the settler attacks against Palestinian farmers increase during the spring as the farmers plant their crops near Israel’s settlements. Farmers from Beit Ummer explained that this attack was not an isolated incident and settler attacks in the area are escalating. They say that the Israeli army often protects the settlers and all complaints to the Israeli authorities have been ignored.
