A senior Iranian cleric has held Western powers accountable for the latest deadly chemical attack near Syria’s northwestern city of Aleppo, which left dozens of people dead.

“Syria is currently at the forefront (of anti-Israel resistance). If the global arrogance succeeded in achieving its objectives there, Iraq would be the next target,” Tehran Interim Friday Prayers Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ahmad Khatami said.

He described Iraqi and Syrian governments as independent, stating that hegemonic powers favor puppet regimes in Baghdad and Damascus, which explains their constant conspiracies against these two countries.

Khatami added that the United States, Britain and Israel are the main parties which mastermind such plots.

He also criticized France for joining the group of criminal powers, arguing that these villain powers are the so-called advocates of human rights which seek to create bloodbath in Syria and Iraq.

The senior cleric then accused reactionary Arab states, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, of conspiring against Syria and Iraq, taking them to task for supplying terrorists with weapons and money.

At least 25 people were killed and 86 others injured after militants fired missiles containing poisonous gas into Aleppo’s Khan al-Assal village on Tuesday. Women and children are reported to be among the victims.

The Syria crisis began in mid-March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security personnel, have been killed in the violence, and several international human rights organizations say the foreign-sponsored militants have committed war crimes.

The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants fighting the Syrian government are foreign nationals.
