‘MENA uprisings have religious roots’

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says the wave of uprisings and revolutions across the Middle East and North Africa stems from the religious, civil and economic demands of the people.

He made the remark in a Sunday meeting with a Tunisian delegation in the Iranian capital Tehran, IRNA reported.

The 12-member Tunisian delegation, which comprised university professors, lawyers, activists and journalists, had travelled to Iran to take part in the 5th International Conference on Palestinian Intifada in Tehran.

During the meeting with the Tunisian delegation, Amir-Abdollahian, who is Iran’s deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, called for the enhancement of relations between Iran and Tunisia in various fields including medicine and media.

Amir-Abdollahian described the Tunisian people as pioneers of the recent popular uprisings, urging the Tunisians to be wary of foreign plots seeking to hijack the regional revolutions.

The Tunisian figures, for their part, expressed their country’s willingness for enhanced cooperation with Iran.

The 5th International Conference on Palestinian Intifada was held in Tehran on October 1-2, 2011.
