Lebanese Speaker Nabih Berri announced that initiatives are in progress to broker a ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel. He emphasized that Israeli strategies intended to apply pressure on Lebanon to compel a surrender are ineffective.
In comments reported by Al-Sharq Al-Awsat Newspaper on Friday evening, Berri emphasized the inviolability of national sovereignty, stating, “Our sovereignty cannot be compromised.”
He steadfastly refuted allegations that the United States proposal, reportedly conveyed to him by U.S. Ambassador Lisa Johnson earlier this week, did not stipulate granting the Israeli military freedom of movement within Lebanon.
Regarding the issue of Israeli freedom of movement in Lebanon, the Lebanese speaker firmly stated that it is “non-negotiable,” emphasizing that there is “no room for discussion.” The speaker also noted that the United States is fully aware of Lebanon’s stance, according to a report by the paper.
He further stated that the United States’ suggestion is not deemed unacceptable concerning the establishment of an international committee tasked with overseeing the enforcement of Resolution 1701.
Regarding Resolution 1701, there has been no sanction for the establishment of an international committee to oversee its implementation, nor any proposal to deploy multinational or NATO forces. There remains a firm commitment to UN Resolution 1701. Efforts will be intensified through the collaboration of UNIFIL forces and the Lebanese army to ensure its execution.
In response to inquiries regarding the extensive Israeli military offensives in his hometown of Tebnine and various neighborhoods in Beirut’s Dahiyeh, Speaker Nabih Berri commented, “It appears that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu believes he can compel submission through aggressive tactics. However, he is unaware of whom he is confronting and fails to recognize that such a strategy is ineffective with us.”
On Friday, Berri held discussions in Beirut with Ali Larijani, an advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei.
Earlier this month, Sheikh Naim Qassem, the Secretary General of Hezbollah, stated that Speaker Berri has been leading discussions to halt Israeli hostilities, lauding Berri’s endeavors as a form of political resistance.
In a recent televised address, the newly appointed Secretary-General of Hezbollah emphasized that any resolution must fully respect Lebanon’s sovereignty, leaving no space for alternative approaches.
