Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is set to call for a shakeup of the European Union following huge gains by eurosceptic parties in recent EU Parliament (EP) elections.

According to some extracts published by the British daily the Times, Blair will call the victories of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) and the National Front in France a “wake-up call.”

The former premier will also note that the results of the elections reveal the European voters’ “deep anxiety, distrust and alienation from the institutions and key philosophy of Europe.”

Furthermore, Blair will stress that “the election of parties across the continent on explicitly ‘anti-the-status-quo in Europe’ platforms signify something,” adding, “they cannot be ignored.”

Blair’s statements are part of a speech that he is set to give to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) later on Monday.

Last week’s European Parliament elections saw huge gains for eurosceptic parties across the EU, including in the UK and France.

The British UKIP came on top in the country’s vote, winning 24 of the country’s 73 seats in the 751-member assembly. In neighboring France, the eurosceptic National Front gained 23 seats out of the country’s 74 allocated seats.

The mainstream parities in the EU on the other hand saw their support drop as government debts, personal debts, and huge unemployment rates continue to plague Europe.
