Brahimi invites Iran to participate in the international conference on Syria

The UN Envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, invited Iran to participate in the international conference due to be held on Syria in Geneva.

Brahimi phoned Iranian Foreign Minister Mohamed Javad Zarif and expressed to him his desire to continue the political consultations with Iran on Syria, stressing the importance of reaching a solution to the crisis in it.

He described Tehran’s role in settling the regional issues as constructive and of a great importance.

Zarif, for his part, affirmed Iran’s keenness on close cooperation with the UN and its envoy.

Iran reaffirms full support for Syria’s government and people

Meanwhile, Iran reiterated support to the Syrian government and people on Tuesday and demanded that the international community condemn the continued sending of weapons and funds to the armed terrorist groups in Syria.

“We strongly believe that the Syrian government will remain in power,” said Advisor to the Supreme Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution, Ali Akbar Velayati, in an interview with the AP.

“Iran for its part will never hesitate to help the Syrian people and the Syrian government in defending its rights and territorial integrity,” he added.

For its part, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Abbas Araqchi, demanded that the international community express condemnation of the sending of weapons and money to the armed terrorist groups in Syria.

In a weekly press release, Araqchi also called upon the international organizations to denounce the terrorist acts taking place in Syria.

He noted that Foreign Minister Zarif stressed to Brahimi in a phone call made by the latter, Iran’s readiness to help in finding a solution to the crisis in Syria.
