Syria army advances deeper into Qusayr

Baqeri_d20130525091233323The Syrian army is pushing ahead with its battle against foreign-backed terrorists, advancing deeper into the strategic western border town of al-Qusayr in Homs province.

The army has unleashed its heaviest artillery and rocket barrage to remove the militants from the town where heavy gunfire has also been reported.

There is no immediate report of casualties.

The Syrian army has kicked off the second phase of its operation in the town after successfully concluded the first phase of battle.

Qusayr, which borders with Lebanon, has been the scene of fierce clashes between Syrian forces and militants over the past few days.

So far, the army has inflicted losses on the foreign-backed insurgents and destroyed their weaponry and equipment.

The senior commander of the terrorist group al-Nusra Front, Abu Omar, was among those killed in battle on May 21.

The Syrian crisis has dragged on for over two years, and many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel, have been killed in the foreign-sponsored militancy.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

On May 18, Syrian President Bashar Assad said militants from 29 different countries are fighting against the government in different parts of the country.

“Recent credible reports show that there are approximately 29 nationalities of foreign fighters engaged in terrorism activities within Syria’s borders,” Assad told Argentine journalists in Damascus.
