“If what happens in Iraq runs against its security and territorial integrity, it will also impact the entire region, including Iran,” Velayati told reporters on Sunday.
He pointed to his talks with UN special envoy in Iraq Ján Kubiš, and said, “During our meeting we discussed territorial integrity and solidarity of the Arab state which should be strengthened day in and day out.”
Velayati reiterated that Iran is fully against separatism in Iraq and also foreign meddling in its internal affairs.
Commenting on President Donald Trump’s statement that the US has spent three trillion dollars in Iraq, but Iran gains the benefit and it should be stopped, Velayati said, “We do not count on the words of people talking irrationally.”
“Americans inflicted huge losses on the Iraqi nation and imposed two destructive wars on them,” Velayati said, adding that they demolished Iraq’s infrastructures, including bridges, roads and factories which cost billions of dollars.
He said that now the Iraqi people suffer blackouts every day, adding that Iraqis should demand compensation from the Americans for their destructive measures.
In a relevant development last week, Iranian Ambassador to Baghdad Hassan Danayeefar renewed his country’s support for the Iraqi government and nation in the ongoing fight against terrorism.
“I reaffirm Tehran’s support for Baghdad in the campaign against terrorist groups,” Danayeefar said in a meeting with Iraqi Vice President Nouri al-Maliki in Baghdad.
During the meeting in the Iraqi capital, the two sides discussed the latest security developments and anti-terror war in Iraq as well as the recent victories by Iraq’s joint military forces in Nineveh Province.
In relevant remarks also in January, Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi and Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jafari in a meeting in Baghdad discussed bilateral ties and regional developments.
During the meeting in the Iraqi capital, Boroujerdi and al-Jafari underlined the need for political solution to the regional crises, specially the situations in Iraq and Syria.
“The two countries have strategic and important relations,” Boroujerdi said during the meeting.
The senior Iranian lawmaker called on Tehran and Baghdad to boost their economic and trade cooperation.
The Iraqi foreign minister, for his part, said Tehran and Baghdad are on the right track of broadening their mutual cooperation.
