British soldier dies in Afghanistan

A powerful blast has killed a British soldier in Afghanistan’s troubled south, amid growing attacks on the US-led forces in the country.

The UK’s Ministry of Defense said in a statement that a royal marine was killed in an explosion in the Sangin District of southern Helmand Province.

The death brings the British fatalities to 290 since the US-led invasion of Afghanistan 9 years ago.

Meanwhile, Denmark has lost its first female soldier in Afghanistan. The Danish military says she was killed when a roadside bomb hit her vehicle in Helmand.

Thirty-two Danish soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since their deployment in 2002.

Last year, 108 British service personnel died in Afghanistan, making it the bloodiest year for the military since the 1982 Falklands War.

Britain has about 10,000 troops in Afghanistan, mostly based in the south of the country.

The occupation of the country was launched supposedly to wipe out the militancy and bring peace to the population.
