Egyptian activists go on hunger strike

At least 44 Egyptian activists have gone on hunger strike to press on with their demand that the country’s Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) meet the legitimate aspirations of the people.

The demonstrators went on hunger strike in the capital Cairo’s Liberation Square on July 10, a Press TV correspondent reported on Monday.

The protesters say that the military courts, long used by ousted President Hosni Mubarak, should not be used to try civilians, according to the correspondent.

“We are on hunger strike because we want the good of the country and we want a frank and constructive national dialog between all of Egypt’s political powers,” Egyptian journalist and activist Rafaat Ghanem said.

“I started my hunger strike on July 10th, but unfortunately the SCAF hasn’t done anything as if our lives are of no importance,” another activist said.

However, there have been several calls from other activists, asking the protesters not to start hunger strikes, arguing that in the current period they will need their energy and power.

“I think hunger strikes all over the world are given the attention needed except in Egypt. I think the Egyptian protesters and strikers should focus their energy on other ways,” activist Ayman Ramadan said.

The protesters on hunger strike have vowed not to break their fast unless the SCAF and Egypt’s interim government meet the demands of the revolution.

The number of Egyptian activists and revolutionaries participating in the hunger strike is constantly increasing.

Following Mubarak’s downfall in February, the military council has taken over in Egypt. Many Egyptians believe the council is trying to derail the uprising.
