Crackdown on protesters to Erdoğan’s policies by Turkish Police

Turkish police have attacked protesters, with tear gas and water cannon in a park in the center of Istanbul, several people injured and others have been arrested.
According to reports, some of the wounded are in critical condition; among them are a politician and a journalist. So far, nearly 100 injured people were hospitalized due to tear gas inhalation. Police attacked on the protesters in the Gezi Park in central Istanbul and by using tear gases have blackened the sky over the Park.

Although this demonstration was against the urban management policies of the Mayor of Istanbul, but now because of the growing number of protestors and the brutal reaction of Turkish police, it has practically become a protest against Erdogan’s government. And many citizens opposed the government have joined the protests in other cities of Turkey, including Ankara.

Some protesters chanted “We have no government, but we Recep Tayyip Erdogan” sounded their opposition to domestic and international policies of Erdogan.

“This is not just about trees anymore; it is about all of the pressure we’re under from this government. We’re fed up, we don’t like the direction the country is headed in,” said one of the protesters in Istanbul.

A political science professor at the University Bosphorus also said: “The government does not respect the wishes of the people, and this is the beginning of a summer of discontent.”

With the rise of tensions and the Turkish police violence against citizens and their brutal repression international organizations have also warned the Turkish government. Amnesty International has condemned Turkish police crackdown on the protests.

This is not for the first time that protests have turned to violence over the last few months of in Turkey. During the International Labor Day demonstration in Istanbul, police clash with the protesters as well.

But some say the protest of the Taksim’s Gezi Park, which various protest groups participated in it, from socialist groups to part of Islamic groups and the extension of it to other cities, is the reason for the widespread protest.
