Democracy in US- Teacher fired over Obama remarks

American teacher Gil Voigt has been fired for comments he made against US President Barack Obama.

Voigt allegedly told a black student who said he wanted to become president that the country did not need another black president, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer.

The Ohio teacher, who is white, was fired after the Fairfield Board of Education voted 4-0 Thursday to fire him.

“The district felt that the evidence was sufficient to support the termination of Mr. Voigt’s employment,” Superintendent Paul Otten said in statement.

Voigt said that students misquoted him, saying what he actually told the teen was that he does not think the US can afford another president like Barack Obama, “whether he’s black or white.”

However, a state referee investigating his charges found that explanation wasn’t credible.

Voigt might appeal his expulsion to a Butler County court. The Ohio Department of Education is continuing investigation in order to decide what to do about his teaching license.

Also in 2012, Voigt was charged with calling a student stupid, but denied making any insulting comments and told school officials that a group of students in his class were colluding against him.

Voigt started teaching in Fairfield schools since 2000. He had been on unpaid leave since December as a result of a parent’s complaint about the Obama remarks.
