Division serves Egyptian enemies: Muslim Brotherhood

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood says that any division among the Egyptian people would only serve the country’s enemies.

“Our divisions and fragmentation only serve the nation’s enemies,” Mohamed Badie, a member of the group, said in a statement posted on their website on Thursday.

On Thursday, the Egyptian military pledged not to use violence against those protesting against President Mohamed Morsi, following deadly overnight clashes between the president’s supporters and opponents.

Earlier in the day, the Egyptian military deployed tanks and armored personnel carriers in an attempt to restore order.

Fresh clashes erupted between the two sides on Thursday, following a brief calm near the Egyptian presidential palace in Cairo. The violence was triggered when Morsi’s supporters started throwing rocks at his opponents.

At least six people have been killed in the violent clashes and more than 350 others injured since Wednesday.

Morsi issued a decree on November 22 declaring that no judicial body can dissolve the Constituent Assembly, which was writing the draft of the constitution.

The decree allows the president to take “any decision or measure to protect the revolution.” It also makes decisions and laws issued by the president “final and not subject to appeal.”

Since the controversial decree was issued, thousands of people have staged massive demonstrations in Cairo and a number of other Egyptian cities in protest against the president’s move and the speedy adoption of a draft constitution.
