Denmark levies charges against individuals involved in Quran desecration acts
In a historic legal development in Denmark, prosecutors have announced the first-ever charges against two individuals for allegedly mishandling a religious text, the Quran, in a move that marks an unprecedented step in addressing disrespect towards sacred scriptures.

The Copenhagen Public Prosecutor has initiated the inaugural case under Section 110e(2) of the Danish Criminal Code, which pertains to the improper handling of religious texts, according to a statement released Friday by the prosecutor’s office, as reported by TRT.
The announcement follows the Justice Minister of Denmark’s authorization to move forward with the legal proceedings, according to the official statement.
Prosecutors have indicated that the event transpired on June 15, 2024, amid the People’s Festival on Bornholm island. Allegations suggest that the suspects engaged in the desecration of the Quran within a tent, either in a public setting or with plans to disseminate the act to a wider audience.
In a recent statement, it was determined that during the People’s Festival, an incident involving the improper handling of a Quran occurred in a public setting. The event was reportedly attended by numerous individuals and gained further exposure through filming and live-streaming on Facebook.
Lise-Lotte Nilas, the Public Prosecutor, officially announced that authorities have sought a financial penalty to be imposed on the suspects.
The legal proceedings have been forwarded to the Court of Bornholm for docketing, though a specific date for the hearing remains pending.
