Ceremonies to mark the holy Islamic month of Muharram have begun across Iran. The Mourning of Muharram is a set of commemoration rituals observed primarily by Shiite Muslims. The event marks the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala (AD 680/AH 61), when Imam Hossein (AS), a grandson of Last Prophet of God Mohammad (PBUH), was martyred by the forces of Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, on the orders of Yazid.
