String of bombing attacks kill 29, injure 70 in Iraq

At least 29 people have been killed and 70 others injured in a series of bombings in Iraq, security and medical officials say.

Car bombs exploded in the Kadhimiya, Sadr City, Saidiyah and Baghdad al-Jadida districts of the capital, killing at least 14 people and injuring at least 47, AFP quoted the officials said as saying.

A roadside bomb in the al-Zafaraniyah area in the southeast of the capital also killed two police officers.

Al-Iraqiya television network reported four other car bomb blasts in Baghdad, quoting the security command responsible for the city.

A car bomb killed eight people and wounded eight others in the deadliest single bombing of the day in the northern city of Kirkuk.

Later in the day, a roadside bomb targeted the Kirkuk police chief’s convoy, and another car bomb exploded nearby killing two people and injured nine others.

An explosives-laden motorcycle detonated at a police checkpoint in al-Tarmia, a town in the al-Faris district of the Baghdad Governorate, killing one policeman and wounding four people.

Two policemen were also killed and two others were wounded in attacks in the northern city of Mosul.

Violence has increased in Iraq since December 2011, when an arrest warrant was issued for fugitive Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, who has been charged with running a death squad targeting Iraqi officials and Shia Muslims.

In response, the government has stepped up efforts to boost security across the country.
