US military base attacked in eastern Afghanistan

Multiple explosions have taken place in front of the US air base in Afghanistan’s eastern city of Jalalabad, Press TV reports.

The blasts were followed by gunfire in the capital of Nangarhar Province during the early hours of Sunday.

A spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force confirmed there had been “multiple explosions in the vicinity of Jalalabad airport,” but he did not provide further details.

Meanwhile, the Taliban militants said that they had carried out offensives, including a bomb attack, against the airport complex in the city which contains a major US air base.

There have been no immediate reports on possible casualties.

According to Afghan government sources and the Taliban, clashes took place after the militants entered the airport complex.

A security guard at the airport said after the first massive explosion the airport came under attacks by rocket-propelled grenades, mortars and small arms.

The Taliban have carried out several attacks on the US bases in the war-torn country over the past months.

The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but after 11 years, insecurity remains in the country.
