FM: Iran in Favor of Convergence with Neighbors

A1131702 (1)Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi announced on Thursday that achieving convergence with Iran’s neighboring states and removing possible differences with them stand atop Tehran’s foreign policy.

Iran is among the few countries in the world that have numerous neighbors and noted that Tehran seeks to achieve convergence with its neighboring states and remove possible differences with them, Salehi said, addressing a national meeting on the legal regime of the Caspian Sea on Thursday.

He said that the Islamic Republic will pursue its national interests in line with commitment to international conventions and treaties.

“Commitment to international conventions and treaties is among Iran’s absolute principles in the field of foreign policy, and the advancement of interests and the maintenance of national sovereignty are carried out [by Iran] in line with these treaties,” Salehi added.

In relevant remarks in August, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei also said “friendship and cooperation” constitute the Islamic Republic of Iran’s policies towards its neighboring countries.

In recent years Iran has initiated massive diplomatic efforts to expand its ties with the neighboring states, specially those Caspian Sea littoral states.

To the same end, President Ahmadinejad’s administration has paid special attention to the increasing expansion of Tehran’s economic, cultural and political ties and cooperation with Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan in the last few years.
