Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif arrived in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Friday to meet with the neighboring country’s officials.
Zarif marks the first Iranian high-ranking official to visit Turkey after the failed coup attempt on July 15 while Iran was the first country to condemn the military coup standing on the side of the Turkish government and nation.
Iran’s Zarif is slated to hold a meeting with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu followed by a joint conference to make public the outcomes of negotiations.
The Iranian foreign minister will also meet and talk with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Given that Turkey’s Prime Minister Binali Yildirim is currently staying in Istanbul, no meeting with has been put on the agenda of Zarif’s visit to Turkey.
The visit follows historical meeting of Turkish and Russian presidents in Saint Petersburg, which has had wide-reaching reflection in the news and diplomatic circles in Ankara.
Political circles have speculated the possibility of establishing a trilateral mechanism among Iran, Turkey and Russia on the Syrian crisis.
Zarif’s meetings in Turkey are expected to deal with bilateral relations with the two sides exchanging views on the latest developments in regional and international issues.
