UN sends invitations for Geneva 2 conference, hopes agreement will be reached on Iran’s participation

UN Assistant Spokesperson, Farhan Haq, said that the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, started Monday sending invitations for the international conference on Syria “Geneva 2” set to be held on January 22nd.

Russia Today website reported Haq as saying, “U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, and Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, will meet on January 13th to make a decision on Iran’s participation.”

“Iran is not on the primary list of invitees, Kerry and Lavrov will meet on Jan. 13th and we hope they can reach agreement on Iran’s participation,” Haq said.

The UN announced that Ban will send invitations within 24 hours.

Participants in the conference were agreed during the troika meeting held December 20th, 2013 comprising Russia, the US and the UN.
