On Sunday, four civilians lost their lives and six others sustained injuries in the Gaza Strip following an alleged breach of the ceasefire by Israeli forces. This incident occurred less than a day after the initial phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza had been concluded.
According to local sources, Mahmoud Medhat Abu Harb, a young Gaza resident, was killed by Israeli sniper fire in central Rafah, located in southern Gaza. Abu Harb’s death marks the fourth fatality reported today. Earlier in the day, two other individuals lost their lives, and four were wounded following an Israeli airstrike on a group of people in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza.
In a recent update, the Red Crescent Society announced that its teams responded to one fatality and two injuries in the town of al-Farahin, east of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza. Additionally, they facilitated the transport of two injured individuals from the center of Rafah.
The recent escalation by Israeli forces has unfolded just a day following the end of the initial phase of the ceasefire agreement. Negotiations for the second phase were initially scheduled to commence on the 16th day of the first phase, specifically on February 3.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declined to participate in negotiations for the second phase of the agreement, opting instead to prolong the initial phase of the exchange deal. His aim is to secure the release of additional Israeli prisoners in Gaza without offering concessions or fulfilling prior commitments stipulated in the agreement. This approach has been met with resistance from Hamas.
Hamas has urged Israel to comply with the established ceasefire agreement and has appealed to mediators to commence discussions for the second phase, which proposes an Israeli withdrawal from the region and an end to hostilities.
Following the initiation of the ceasefire on January 19, the occupying forces have reportedly been responsible for numerous breaches, leading to over 100 fatalities and several hundred injuries. Additionally, there have been significant shortcomings in the execution of the humanitarian protocol.
Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli military has initiated extensive military operations in the Gaza Strip, leading to the reported deaths of 48,388 individuals, predominantly women and children, with 111,803 others injured. These figures are preliminary as many victims are still trapped beneath debris, and rescue efforts face significant challenges.
