German carmaker Opel to cut thousands of jobs across the country

Opel Company in Germany has planned to slash thousands of jobs, following a statement released by the carmaker’s owner General Motors.

“The reduction will be accomplished through voluntary separations, early retirements and natural attrition,” General Motors Europe said in a statement on Thursday.

At least 2,600 workers will lose their jobs, the statement added.

According to the statement, most of the workers to lose their jobs are German.

This comes as the troubled German auto manufacturer lost 500 billion dollars in Europe in the third quarter of the year.

Reports also say that Opel has planned to close its loss-making car factory in the western German city of Bochum, once the production of the Zafira Tourer van ends in 2016.

To cut costs, the company has witnessed a 100,000-unit reduction in the number of cars in its inventory since February.
