Greek PM offers to resign amid protests

Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou has offered to resign in return for the establishment of a national government, as protests against his government’s austerity measures intensify.

Papandreou has agreed to step down from power if certain targets are accepted by the new government, Reuters reported.

“Prime Minister Papandreou talked with Mr. Samaras today and proposed that if the two agreed on a framework of specific commitments for changes in the country and the political system and specific targets, he would be willing to stand down from his office,” a Wednesday statement by the Greek government said.

Greece has witnessed massive protests and three general strikes against the government’s austerity measures.
