Video- Greek unionists mourn deceased protester

It was the most powerful gathering of the labour movement, having gained momentum over the last few months of austerity legislation.

Collective reaction of Greek workers had been difficult to ascertain over the last year and a half after the fatal torching of a private bank in Athens in 2010, in another major demonstration, which cost the life of three employees and brought defeatism among workers, who viewed those events as a fatal diversion from the desired outcome, to steer away from oncoming poverty and increased inequality.

But the two-month Occupy Constitution Sq. Movement protests this summer brought a new sense of action and reaction to the increasing governmental blindness.

This is the moment it all goes wrong, when the strike agenda is ripped apart by the so-called usual suspects, the hidden, hooded individuals who hit protesters for the first time ever.

Their action goes back decades, to the Greek junta of the generals, when secret service agents, some trained abroad, would cause rifts during public gatherings, to then blame the workers as disorganized and prone to violence.

In the nineties, they blended in with the anarchist movement in Greece, sometimes without anyone’s knowledge, easily camouflaging themselves as stone-throwing extreme protesters.

These ghost operatives have been greatly responsible for the lack of progress in politics and society, winding back the clock every time they cause serious trouble, and since last year, death.

Even though the man was not killed by someones’ specific hit, he did loose his life as a result of extreme tension during the attack.

Since the latest tragic event, all trade unions in Greece have issued statements, blaming the government for the existence of these shadowy characters and promising to fight back for workers’ rights more fiercely than ever.
