Hague: govt. sticks to austerity plan

British Foreign Secretary, William Hague, has warned that the government would remain steadfast in implementing its austerity measures as thousands of protestors condemn the policies.

In his speech delivered at the Conservative Party conference, Hague maintained that the British government’s commitment to its austerity drive would remain “unwavering” as he tried to be cautious by bringing up deficit cuts as the major driving force behind austerity policies.

“It is wrong, unfair and irresponsible to leave a massive debt for the next generation to deal with instead of facing up to it now. Our resolve to deal with this is and will remain unwavering,” said Hague.

Hague’s comments on government’s determination to head on with sharp spending cuts come as 35,000 British people have staged a rally protest called “The Alternative” calling for a general strike slamming the government’s policies.

Furthermore, the protesters, who took to the streets in Manchester where the ruling conservatives hold their annual autumn conference, urged British Prime Minister David Cameron to step down. They were holding placards with a picture of Cameron reading, “He’s got to go.”

Moreover, Hague insisted that conservatives prioritized tackling budget deficit over cutting taxes saying, “this is up to the Chancellor. We believe in the Conservative Party in having lower taxes – of course we do. But we also believe in having our budget under control. That has always got to be the priority otherwise you don’t have economic competence.”

As Tony Lloyd, the Labour MP for Manchester Central, who was among the protesters said: “even top Tories are calling on George Osborne [the Chancellor] to go for a proper plan B and go for growth,” Hague insisted, “This chancellor will not waver, this Government will not waver.”
