Syrian Army steamrolls through southeast Damascus

A handout picture released by the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) shows Syrian Army soldiers walking around the government-controlled Hanano barracks in Aleppo, on April 17, 2014.

Over the last two months, the Syrian Arab Army’s 102nd Brigade and the 416th Regiment of the Republican Guard – together with the Russian Air Force and the National Defense Forces (NDF) – have made several advances inside the East Ghouta region of rural Damascus, capturing farm after farm from the Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) and Jaysh Al-Islam (Army of Islam).
Unable to evade the swarming Russian jets and the barrage of mortar shells from the Syrian Armed Forces, Jaysh Al-Islam has steadily begun to collapse inside the East Ghouta, while they watch their presence quickly diminish in favor of Jabhat Al-Nusra – a rebel group they have clashed with on a number of occasions.
Taking advantage of Jaysh Al-Islam’s misery has been a key factor in the Syrian Armed Forces’ imperative advance inside the East Ghouta; this has even led to the capture of several sites that were once deemed impregnable.

On Wednesday morning, the Syrian Arab Army’s 102nd Brigade – in coordination with the 416th Regiment, the National Defense Forces, and the Palestine Liberation Army (PLA) – captured another set of farms that are located at the western outskirts of Qantarah; this aforementioned village is located just east of the Marj Al-Sultan Military Airport.

In addition to their advance in Qantarah, the Syrian Armed Forces also advanced inside of al-Bilaliyah, which is also situated to the east of the Marj Al-Sultan Airport.
