Saudi Arabia, boiling caldron ready to erupt

Press TV has conducted an interview with Colin Cavell, a political commentator from West Virginia, to further talk about the Saudi protests against the Al Saud rulers. The following is an approximate transcription of the interview.

Press TV: How do you assess this ongoing Saudi uprising, if I may call it that? You know, it has been going on even through the brutal crackdown of the monarchy.

Cavell: We have one of the most repressive regimes on earth in Saudi Arabia. The king of Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah and his family that have the house of Saud put people in prison, anybody who they do not like or who questions the rule of the Al Saud family.

So it is a dictatorship which is highly repressive, jails people, kills people, murders people and denies any type of basic democratic freedoms to its population. Moreover, there are lots of immigrants in Saudi Arabia who do most of the work in Saudi Arabia and they have no freedom at all. Their passports are confiscated by the government; they are denied payments and many of them are abused sexually.

And so what we have is a caldron that is boiling, continuously boiling, ready to erupt because the entire region is tired of these dictators, tired of these monarchs, these unelected monarchs who have no legitimacy at all and who are claiming to represent some sort of authority but they have no legitimate authority and they have lots of money. That is all they have.

And so the US prostitutes itself to Saudi Arabia, to the house of Saud in order to keep [oil] and so right now in Syria, as your previous report indicated, the United States is helping al-Qaeda operatives in Syria; we are doing the bidding of the house of Saud.

We are trying to push back the Arab spring. We are trying to push back the demands of people for democracies, for freedom and we are doing this all at the behest of the house of Saud and Qatar and the other [Persian] Gulf monarchs, the most reactionary governments on earth.

Press TV: I wanted to ask you then if the United States is doing this all at the behest of the house of Saud? Is this going to be a successful plot in the region? Or will this fail?

Cavell: It will definitely fail because people want freedom; naturally human beings want liberation; they want the ability to participate in their own governance; they want the ability to speak their minds, to associate with who they want to.

This is the nature of humanity; this is the nature of human freedom and people have been fighting for tens of thousands of years for more and more freedoms and despite with the house of Saud and the Qatari monarchs attempt to do, it is not going to see it. The United States is betraying its democratic heritage by prostituting itself to the house of Saud, unelected monarchs who are repressing their people.
