Horsemeat scandal puts UK poor at risk

British poor who buy the cheapest food are largely at risk of having contaminated food, one of the country’s leading retailers has warned, amid ongoing horsemeat scandal in the country.

Chief executive of Waitrose Mark Price warned safe and genuine food cannot be seen as a “cheap commodity” any longer.

“If, at the same time, there is a requirement to hit a price point for consumers under financial pressure then there will be an inevitable strain in the supply chain,” he said.

Price’s intervention comes as recent tests have found horsemeat in British school meals, hospital food, and restaurant dishes.

Moreover, Britain’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) said it is not probable that the government could determine the exact number of people who have unknowingly eaten horsemeat.

Earlier last week, British public service trade union Unison raised concerns over the scandal, saying that the recent findings have proved the private sector profit is more important than the public safety.
