Islamic Republic of Iran paid heavy price for fighting narcotics: Envoy

Islamic Republic of Iran’s deputy ambassador to the United Nations Eshaq Al Habib said that thousands of Iranian military and police personnel have been martyred in the Iranian government’s fight against drug trafficking and narcotics.

Al Habib made the remarks during his speech at Social Affairs and Human Rights Committee of the United Nations General Assembly.

Iranian diplomat explained Iran’s measures and stances concerning the fight against drug trafficking at three national, regional and international levels.

‘Unfortunately, since deployment of western troops in Afghanistan after collapse of Taliban government in Afghanistan, not only the problem of narcotics in Afghanistan has not been resolved, poppy cultivation in different parts of Afghanistan has also increased,’ Al Habib added.

Referring to the long common border between Islamic Republic of Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan in accordance with the statistics issued by the United Nations Office of Drug Control (UNODC), the Iranian diplomat pointed out that Iran has proven its determination in blocking transit of narcotics from Iran.
