At least one person has been killed and 14 others wounded after two bombs exploded on a Guwahati-bound train in India’s southern province of Tamil Nadu.

The two low-intensity blasts occurred in different coaches of an overnight train from Bangalore as it was approaching Chennai Central railway station around 7:00 am local time (0130 GMT) on Thursday.

The attack injured a total of 14 people, two of them seriously, and killed a 22 year-old female passenger.

Authorities failed to say who was behind the attack, but said an investigation was underway.

“Our city police team, our railway police team and the local police officer are all here, the forensic team has also arrived. The bomb detection disposal squad has also arrived. They are carrying out thorough searches. We have isolated, cordoned off that area and making thorough searches to find out what exactly happened,” said director general of police, K. Ramanujam.

The incident comes as India approaches the end of a massive general election involving some 814 million Indians, 100 million more than the number at the last polls in 2009.

The nine-phase election marathon began on April 7 and will come to an end on May 12. The final results are expected to be announced on May 16.
