US soldiers kill Afghan MP relative

US troops have raided the home of a female Afghan lawmaker and killed one of her relatives amid growing discontent with the presence of foreign forces in Afghanistan.

The attack took place in a village in the eastern province of Nangarhar.

The female MP said scores of US soldiers stormed into her home before midnight and tied up her family members.

They then fatally shot her brother-in-law who lived in the house next door.

NATO has confirmed the incident. It says intelligence reports showed the house was being used by militants.

The killing has sparked angry protests in eastern Afghanistan. Chanting anti-American and anti-government slogans, furious Afghans have demanded to know why and how the victim was killed.

The 126,000-strong foreign presence in the country has so far failed to stabilize Afghanistan and bring peace and security to the war-torn country.
