The deputy secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) says the P5+1 group has taken a new approach based on respect for Iran’s rights, Press TV reports.
During a telephone interview with Press TV from Istanbul late on Saturday, Ali Baqeri said, “There was a new approach adopted by the other party (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) at this meeting and this new approach contributed to the positive outcomes of the meeting.”
He noted that Iran’s capabilities in the field of nuclear technology have made the P5+1 group respect Iran’s rights as stipulated in the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
“Naturally, the capacities of the Islamic Republic of Iran in various areas have created conditions directing the other party towards respecting the role of the c,” Baqeri said.
During the Istanbul meetings, Iran and the P5+1 group agreed to hold the next round of talks in Baghdad on May 23, 2012.
“The next meeting is scheduled to be held in Baghdad and in order to have… successful negotiations, representatives from both parties will cooperate in order to prepare a draft,” which “delineates the agenda of the Baghdad meeting and also the future prospects for negotiations,” Baqeri added.
The first round of negotiations was held on Saturday morning in Istanbul, after which Iran started bilateral talks with all the members of the P5+1 group except the United States, and the second round of comprehensive negotiations was held in the afternoon.
During a press conference in Istanbul on Saturday night, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Saeed Jalili, described the talks as a step forward.
EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton described the talks as useful and constructive, saying that Iran has the right to have a civilian nuclear energy program.
Tehran and the P5+1 group held two previous rounds of talks, one in Geneva in December 2010 and another in Istanbul in January 2011.
