A protester has been shot dead outside a police station in the Egyptian city of Port Said, according to a person working at a hospital.

“A young man called Mohammed Gharib was killed [on Monday] by gunfire during clashes outside the al-Arab police station in Port Said,” and the man died on his way to the hospital, AFP quoted the unnamed source as saying.

The protesters in Port Said are angry that people from their city were found guilty of murdering 74 people, who were killed in a riot that broke out in their town after Port Said-based Al-Masry defeated Cairo’s Al-Ahly 3-1 in a football match.

On Saturday, a judge sentenced 21 local people to death for their roles in the February 1, 2012 riot, in which 1,000 people were also injured.

Earlier on Monday, Egyptian media outlets reported that at least 11 members of the security forces were injured in Cairo in clashes between anti-government demonstrators and police.

Over the past few days, thousands of Egyptians have staged demonstrations in Cairo, Alexandria, Suez, Port Said, and many other cities and towns to call on President Mohamed Morsi, who took office in June 2012, to fulfill his election promises.

The protesters are demanding that Morsi provide them with a pay rise, official contracts, and better working conditions.

The Egyptians launched the revolution against the pro-Israeli regime on January 25, 2011, which eventually brought an end to the 30-year dictatorship of Mubarak on February 11, 2011.
