Iran Calls on UN to Take Immediate Action to Halt Israeli Settlement Activities

Iran’s Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Eshaq Al-e-Habib called for immediate and practical measures by the international community, specially the UN Security Council, to pressure the Zionist regime into halting its settlement construction activities in Palestinian territories.

The Iranian envoy made the remarks addressing a specialized committee meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York on Friday and on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). Iran picked up the NAM’s rotating presidency at the 16th heads-of-state summit of the grouping in Tehran in late August.

“The NAM is concerned about the illegal measures taken by the Israeli regime to displace the Palestinians from the strategic regions of the (occupied) Palestinian territories, including Eastern Holy Qods, as well as the demolishing of the Palestinian homes and Zionist regime’s settlement construction activities …,” Al-e Habib said.

Issued in Tehran on August 31, the final statement of the 16th heads-of-state summit of the NAM underlined the Palestinian nation’s right to have an independent state with the Holy Qods as its capital.

“The occupation of Palestine and the crimes of the Zionist regime in the occupied territories have always been the root causes of tensions in the Middle-East,” the statement said.

“Any solution to end the crisis should include ways to end occupation, restore the inalienable rights of the Palestinian nation, specially their rights to determine their own fate and establishment of a stable and independent country with the Holy Qods as its capital, as the only way to establish sustainable peace in the region,” it added.

The statement, which included 11 clauses, said that heads of NAM member states gathered in Tehran to review the current international situation to help resolve problems which have caused serious concerns for both member states and the whole humanity.
