‘Iran-Egypt ties, strong front against US’

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili says Iran-Egypt potential for developing ties can form a strong regional alliance against US hegemony and Israel’s expansionism.

Jalili made the remark during an interview with al-Ahram newspaper  on Monday.

The senior Iranian official pointed out that Tehran-Cairo relations could also contribute to the change of the power balance in favor of regional countries.

He expressed Iran’s readiness to develop ties with Egypt in different sectors including peaceful nuclear technology within the framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Jalili also reiterated that there is no obstacle to the normalization of Tehran-Cairo relations.

Referring to popular uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa, Jalili stated that regional nations’ will to gain independence has played a significant role in the wave of Islamic awakening in the Arab world.

He further explained that revolutions in Arab countries were the result of Islamic awakening and a determination to gain true independence.

The top Iranian official called on regional countries to meet the legitimate demands of their nations.

Jalili accused the United States of supporting despotic regimes in the region and said, Washington’s wrong policies have even endangered the interests of the US itself.

He added that the US foreign policy is based on deception.

The United States claims to be an advocate of democracy while it seeks to weaken [such] governments, he concluded.
