Mexico condemns US border shooting

The Mexican government has condemned the fatal shooting of a Mexican man by US border guards after he threw rocks at them from across the border.

The Mexican foreign ministry said the use of firearms in response to stone-throwing was “disproportionate” use of force, the state-run BBC reported on Thursday.

The shooting occurred near the San Ysidro border crossing between Mexico’s Tijuana and the US city of San Diego late on Tuesday night.

US authorities say three men were stopped by US border agents from trying to get over the border. Two of the men fled back across the border fence and started throwing rocks at the agents.

Mexicans are sensitive about border incidents, especially since the US built a 1,046-kilometer barrier fence to prevent illegal immigration.

According to US immigration experts and the Mexican government, up to 500 people die every year crossing the US-Mexican border, a sharp jump from a decade ago.
