The Islamic Republic of Iran has been elected as the new head of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).

On Sunday, Mohammad Hossein Adeli, the former governor of Iran’s central bank and ambassador to London, was chosen as the 13-nation group’s secretary general for a two-year term.

The post was transferred to the Islamic Republic during the body’s 15th ministerial meeting in the Iranian capital Tehran.

The forum is an intergovernmental organization of the world’s top natural gas producers comprising Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.

The GECF, which enjoys a strong position in the world gas market, was established with the objective of building a more meaningful dialogue between gas producers and gas consumers in an effort to protect stability and security of supply and demand in global natural gas markets.

Iran, which sits on the world’s second largest natural gas reserves after Russia, has been trying to enhance its gas production by increasing foreign and domestic investment, especially in its South Pars Gas Field.
