Iran has evidence that US, Arab states smuggle arms into Syria

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says the United States and some Arab countries are transferring illegal arms into Syria.

Speaking in the Russian capital of Moscow on Tuesday, Amir-Abdollahian said Tehran possesses evidence that Washington and a number of Arab states have been trafficking illegal arms and ammunition to Syria.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister, who arrived in Russia a day earlier for talks with Russian officials on the latest developments in the Middle East and North Africa, also stressed that Iran rejects any foreign intervention in Syria’s internal affairs and that national dialogue is the sole way to settle the Syrian unrest.

Amir-Abdollahian’s visit to Russia is taking place in line with a decision by Tehran and Moscow to hold constant consultations over regional issues.

Iran and Russia have repeatedly expressed support for reforms pledged and implemented by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government and the legitimate demands of the Syrian people.

Both countries have also been in unison against foreign interference in Syria’s internal affairs.

President Assad reiterated on February 20 that “some foreign countries” are fueling the year-long crisis in Syria by supporting and funding “armed terrorist groups fighting against the government.”

US-backed kingdoms of Saudi Arabia and Qatar as well as Turkey have openly backed the armed rebels in Syria.
