Jalili Terms US, Israel “Enemies of Islam, Syria”


Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Saeed Jalili condemned the US and the Zionist regime of Israel’s long history of animosity towards Islamic states, Syria in particular.

Speaking in a meeting with visiting Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem here in Tehran on Sunday, Jalili stressed that the US and Israel have long-standing enmity towards Syria.

Jalili, who is also Iran’s chief negotiator, underlined that the world of Islam considers the US and the Zionist regime of Israel as its enemies.

He blamed current insecurities in Syria on Washington and Tel Aviv, and noted that they are targeting the Syrian nation in revenge for defeats in the 22-day war on Gaza in January 2009 and the 33-day summer war in Lebanon (2006).

For his part, the Syrian foreign minister lauded the deep-rooted and strategic ties between Tehran and Damascus.

Muallem further stressed that the Syrian cities are now relatively calm and cleared of terrorists.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against Syrian police forces and border guards being reported across the country.

The US and its western and regional allies have long sought to topple Bashar al-Assad and his ruling system. Media reports said that the Syrian rebels and terrorist groups have received significantly more and better weapons in recent weeks, a crime paid for by the Persian Gulf Arab states and coordinated by the United States.
