Iran’s Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has poured scorn on the recent resolution by the European Parliament (EP) against the Islamic Republic.

“The EP’s resolution, either in terms of compilation or in terms of its symbolic status which is of no binding nature, is nothing more than a statement,” Larijani said on Sunday.

He also pointed to the contradictory tone of the resolution, which was adopted on April 3.

Larijani said the resolution, while calling for more cooperation between Iran and the European Union (EU), expresses “meddlesome” remarks about Iran’s democratic establishment, human rights situation and elections.

The resolution expresses concern over the alleged violation of human rights in the country.

It also claims that Iran’s presidential election in June 2013, which was marked by a high voter turnout led to the victory of President Hassan Rouhani, was “not held according to the democratic standards valued by the EU.”

“Doubtlessly, we do not favor the Western election standards and [Western-style] democracy,” Larijani said.

Iran has dismissed the resolution as unrealistic and counterproductive at a time when the Islamic Republic and the European Union have taken initial steps to resolve issues germane to mutual relations.

In December 2013, a member of the European Parliament said the EU countries had informally requested the parliament to open an embassy in Iran to facilitate more “open exchange.”
