The Syrian army has restarted military activity at a major airbase that had been under the control of the Takfiri Daesh terrorists for over a year.

“Warplanes and helicopters have resumed activity at the Kuweires military airport, after the valiant army secured its surroundings,” state television reported on Tuesday.

The airbase, located in Syria’s northern province of Aleppo, would turn into “the launching point to strike Daesh bases in eastern parts of Aleppo,” the report said.

Television footage showed helicopters taking off and flying over Kuweires and broadcast live interview with Colonel Suheil Hassan, who led the Syrian army forces in the operation that liberated the base.

Hassan said the “huge accomplishment… was only realized because of the blood of our martyrs and our wounded.”

Daesh captured the airbase in the spring of 2014.

In November this year, however, the Syrian forces backed by Russian airstrikes, broke the siege around the base.

Syrian forces have recently been making rapid advances against the Takfiri terrorists in several parts of the country.

The advances of the Syrian government forces against Daesh and other terrorist groups have been expedited by the air cover provided by Russia, which began on September 30 at the request of the Damascus government.
