Egyptians demand independent judiciary

Hundreds of Egyptians have once again taken to the streets, demanding the establishment of an independent judiciary.

The demonstration was held on Tuesday outside the Supreme Court in the capital, Cairo.

The protest was called for by a campaign called “Yes to the independence of Egyptian judiciary” and led by former judge Ahmed Niki.

Protesters demanded the restructuring of the country’s judicial system as well as the ouster of the Prosecutor General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud, a remnant of the ousted US-backed regime of Hosni Mubarak.

Demonstrators also demanded that judges should be selected based on their scholarly knowledge as well as skills and not appointed by the government.

Demonstrators chanted slogans against the ruling military and the head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces Mohamed Hussein Tantawi.

There is growing skepticism in Egypt over the transition of power from the military rulers to a civilian government, our correspondent reports.

The Egyptian military assumed power in the major African country following the February downfall of Mubarak’s US-sponsored dictatorship.
