Iran-Oman to activate joint security committees

IRI Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar arrived in Muscat Sunday to hold talks with senior Omani officials on ways to tighten security and improve bilateral cooperation.

He was welcomed by his Omani counterpart upon arrival.

“The visit is aimed at following up security agreements (already signed between the two countries) and activating security committees,” Mohammad-Najjar told reporters ahead of his departure from the Iranian capital on Sunday.

He pointed to the strategic geographical position of Iran and Oman in the Strait of Hormuz and said, “Sixty percent of the world’s energy pass through this strait and Iran and Oman play a significant role in tightening security of the energy passage.”

The Iranian minister noted that Tehran and Muscat enjoy cooperation in the fields of transportation, transit and energy and added that border cooperation, health, legal and judicial aid and shipping are among other issues to be raised in talks with Omani officials.

Mohammad-Najjar praised growing trade ties between Iran and Oman and expressed hope the visit would open a new chapter in mutual relations.
