Afghans worse off after US-led invasion

Over a decade after the US attacked Afghanistan under the pretext of bringing about peace, the situation in the war-torn country keeps deteriorating, Press TV reports.

The US and its allies invaded Afghanistan shortly after the September 11, 2001, attacks in New York City as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror to eliminate the al-Qaeda and the Taliban. However, analysts say the results have turned out to be different from what they claimed.

“For the US and its allies, annihilation of al-Qaeda-led terrorism in Afghanistan was a pretext to follow their own interests, including expansion of the US hegemony in the region,” military expert, Jawid Kohestani, told Press TV.

Analysts also say that the US has failed to deliver on its promise to contain poppy cultivation in Afghanistan.

“The US and NATO not only failed to reduce poppy cultivation, but in my viewpoint, they intentionally supported the poppy cultivation to increase the number of addicts here. Of course, their main goal was to eliminate ant-invasion sense among Afghans” political analyst, Sayed Zakaria Rahel, said.

Although the US-led invasion removed the Taliban from power, insecurity continues to grapple the country despite the presence of thousands of foreign troops and many Afghans believe that Washington has not succeeded in establishing peace and stability in the country.
