Iran pres. to attend OIC summit in Cairo

A senior Iranian official says Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will participate in the upcoming summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

According to Press TV, Mohammad Reza Forqani, director general for international affairs at Iran’s Presidential Office, said on Wednesday that Ahmadinejad would leave Tehran for Cairo on February 6.
Iran severed ties with Egypt after Cairo signed the 1978 Camp David Accord with the Zionist regime and offered asylum to Iran’s deposed monarch Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.
Forqani said on Wednesday “As one of the largest Muslim countries, Iran has always tried to actively participate in all the summits of the organization at all levels.”
During the summit, which will be held on February 2-7 in Cairo, Egypt will take over the OIC presidency for the next three years.
The OIC, which was established in 1969, has 57 member states spread over four continents.
Forqani added that Iran would attend the OIC summit as the head of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
Iran assumed the rotating presidency of NAM for a three-year term during the movement’s summit in the country’s capital, Tehran, in August 2012.
Forqani said “On the other hand, we are witnessing developments and incidents in the Muslim world and, therefore, such a summit has special importance to further cooperation among Muslim countries.”
