Reports from northern Kenya say dozens of people have been killed in a week of fierce fighting between rival ethnic groups.

According to local reports, at least 27 people have been killed and more than 32,000 displaced over the past week.

Kenyan newspaper, Standard Digital reported continued heavy fighting in the border town of Moyale on Saturday. Many families have been forced to flee across the border into Ethiopia.

The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) said the displaced communities came from Butiye, Arosa and Gurumesa in Moyale.

“Several people have fled their homes since Tuesday this week as fighting between rival militias intensified. Some were forced to live with relatives in Wajir and Marsabit towns,” KRCS Moyale coordinator Stephen Bonaya said, adding, “These people are in dire need of food support, shelter, water, cooking utensils, clothes and mosquito nets.”

Kenya government has ordered the military troops to be deployed to the area.

Local residents believe that the police have given the militia time to fight until they run out of bullets.

The Kenyan authorities have also established inter-clan committees to help restore stability in the region.

There are many bloody tribal clashes over access to water and pasture with subsequent revenge attacks in different parts of Kenya.
