At least seven policemen have been killed in an ambush carried out by the Taliban militants in Afghanistan’s northern province of Kunduz, an Afghan official says.

Nasruddin Khan, the governor of the Dashti Archi district, said the incident happened on Thursday, when the policemen, who were traveling to a neighboring province to collect their salaries, were attacked by up to 30 militants.

Also on Wednesday night, four police officers were killed after gunmen attacked a security check post in the Syagurd district in Parwan Province, north of the capital, Kabul, according to provincial governor Mohammad Sayed Sediqi.

Earlier on February 17, at least 20 policemen were killed when the Taliban gunmen attacked a police headquarters near Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul.

Nine people were also wounded during the attack, which was carried out in Logar Province’s Puli Alam city.

According to reports, more than 5,000 policemen were killed by militants in 2014.

The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror.

Although the US-led invasion removed the Taliban from power, insecurity remains rampant in the country.

The US-led combat mission in Afghanistan ended on December 31, 2014. However, at least 13,000 foreign forces, mainly from the United States, will remain in Afghanistan in what is said to be a support mission.

In 2014, more than 5,000 policemen were killed by militants, raising concerns about the force’s sustainability.
